A Roller Skate That Actually Rolls Into the Spotlight
This month, we built a custom Roller Skate LED Neon Sign for one of our clients — a bold, retro-inspired piece designed to stop foot traffic and trigger instant photos.
But the interesting part of this build wasn’t just the shape.
It was the question we had to answer before a single LED was bent:
For an outdoor-facing sign, what should the backboard actually be made of?
Most people expect acrylic. We went with 2cm rigid PVC. Here’s the full reasoning — and when you should (or shouldn’t) do the same.

Acrylic vs 2cm PVC: The Real Comparison
Backboards are the unsung hero of a neon sign. They decide whether the piece stays flat, stays mounted, and stays good-looking after a few seasons of weather.
Here’s how the two stack up for outdoor advertising and commercial décor.

2cm Rigid PVC (Our Pick)
|
|---|---|---|
|
Visual finish
|
Glossy, premium, gallery-clean
|
Matte-industrial, still clean when lit
|
|
Weight
|
Light, but heavier as thickness grows

Why 2cm PVC Won This Project
For a roller skate shape mounted where people gather, lean, and bump into walls, acrylic alone felt risky.
The 2cm PVC gave us four clear advantages:
1. Structural stiffness without the weight
A thin acrylic board can flex or resonate on a façade. At 2cm, PVC stays dead-flat — no vibration, no rattling in wind or bass-heavy venues.
2. Impact-ready for public spaces
Skate shops, rinks, and event spaces are high-contact environments. PVC shrugs off knocks that would chip or crack acrylic.
3. Easier, safer installation
Lighter board = simpler wall mounts, fewer anchor points, lower risk during handling and global shipping.
4. Better value for movable / semi-permanent installs
If the sign will travel between events or rotate storefronts, PVC survives the road better than glass-clear acrylic.
Where Acrylic Still Wins
We’re not anti-acrylic — far from it.
For indoor brand walls, luxury retail, transparent “floating” effects, and 5+ year permanent outdoor installs, cast acrylic (or a hybrid: PVC structure + thin acrylic face) is often the better call.
Our rule of thumb:
- Indoor / premium / backlit → Cast acrylic
- Outdoor / high-traffic / transport-heavy → 2cm PVC
- Large façade / coastal / industrial → ACP or stainless steel substrate
The right answer is never “one material for everything.” It’s “the right substrate for the wall it lives on.”
How We Made It Last Outdoors
A backboard is only half the battle. Outdoor neon fails at the seams, not the glow.
For this roller skate build we applied our standard outdoor QC:
- Silicone neon flex (UV-stable, not cheap yellowing PVC jacket)
- IP65 sealing on every end cap, cable entry, and splice point
- Neutral-cure silicone — never acidic sealant that corrodes copper traces
- 12V/24V low-voltage layout reviewed for voltage drop on long runs
- Sliding mounting clips so the board breathes with temperature changes
- 24–48h burn-in to catch dead LEDs, flicker, and dim segments before shipping
- Export crating engineered for 200+ country shipments
Certifications per model: CE / RoHS / FCC standard, UL on selected models.
The Takeaway for Signage Buyers
If you’re specifying a custom neon piece for outdoor use, don’t just ask “how bright is the neon?”
Ask:
- What’s the backboard made of?
- How are the joints sealed?
- Will it warp, yellow, or crack in 12 months?
- Can it survive being moved, shipped, or bumped?
For this roller skate, 2cm PVC was the engineering choice — not a cost cut.
