Have you ever wondered why two LED neon signs that look similar at first glance can have vastly different price points and lifespans? The answer often lies beneath the surface—in the backing board.
At Vasten Lighting, we believe that true quality starts from the foundation. That’s why we insist on using only cast acrylic for every neon sign we produce, even when cheaper alternatives like extruded acrylic or PS (polystyrene) boards are widely available in the market.
Cast vs. Extruded vs. PS: The Critical Differences

Many manufacturers use the term “acrylic” loosely, but not all acrylic is created equal. Here’s a breakdown of why the manufacturing process matters:

✅ High (92%-94%), crystal clarity
|
⚠️ Moderate, prone to optical defects
|
❌ Low, hazy appearance

✅ Excellent (10+ years UV resistance)
|
⚠️ Prone to aging/yellowing

Why Vasten Only Uses Cast Acrylic
Our philosophy is simple: build for longevity, not for the lowest price. Here’s what this commitment means for your sign:
Purer, More Premium Light: Cast acrylic has no internal stress lines, resulting in softer, more even diffusion of the neon light—giving that sought-after “high-end glow.”
Built for the Outdoors: Storefronts and outdoor signs face sun, rain, and temperature swings. Cast acrylic maintains its color, shape, and strength for years, ensuring “install once, worry-free for a decade.”
Flawless Fabrication: It laser-cuts and engraves with crisp, clean edges, preserving the fine details of your logo or design—essential for a premium brand image.
No Compromises on Quality: While others may switch to extruded or PS boards to cut costs, the problems (yellowing, warping, uneven lighting) often surface within 6–12 months. We choose the better material so your sign remains a brand asset, not a liability.
A Quick Guide for Buyers: How to Spot the Difference
Look at the Cut Edge: Cast acrylic has a fine, satin (frosted) finish. Extruded acrylic is smooth and glossy. PS board appears whitish and powdery.
Scratch Test (discreetly): Gently scratch an inconspicuous area. Cast acrylic will show little to no mark, extruded will scratch more easily, and PS will dent noticeably.
Ask the Question: Always specify, “Is the backing board made from cast acrylic?”

The Bottom Line
Extruded Acrylic = Lower cost, suitable for short-term indoor use.
Cast Acrylic = The choice for high-end, outdoor, long-term durability and brand integrity.
PS Board = Not recommended for any professional signage.
At Vasten Lighting, we don’t just make neon signs; we craft enduring brand statements. By insisting on cast acrylic, we ensure every piece we deliver is a masterpiece of clarity, durability, and design.
Choose the foundation that lasts. Choose quality. Choose cast acrylic.
