Our client, a new-build speakeasy called Midnight & Co.in London’s Shoreditch creative district, wanted a façade sign that matched their brand: industrial-edgy, low-light moody, and instantly Instagrammable for passers-by 3 seconds after they turn the corner.
Their brief was specific:

Brand name “MIDNIGHT” in a custom condensed sans-serif, plus a small crescent moon icon

Acrylic backers were ruled out immediately: they couldn’t deliver the cold, tactile metal finish the client wanted, and fine cutouts in acrylic tend to yellow and chip within 12–18 months in a bar setting. A cutout metal backplate was the only solution — but it’s a far more complex build than standard Neon Signage.

1. Design & Feasibility Review
The client sent a hand-drawn sketch of their logo. Our in-house design team converted it to a production-ready AI vector file, then generated a 3D mockup to confirm:

Stroke widths for “MIDNIGHT” (condensed sans, 8mm stroke weight — thin enough to look premium, thick enough to fit 5mm neon flex inside the cutout)

2. Laser-Cut Metal Backplate (In-House)
We used 1.5mm 304 brushed stainless steel (chosen for its scratch resistance and moody finish that pairs with the bar’s brick walls and brass hardware):

Laser cut to ±0.1mm tolerance on our in-house CNC laser cutter — critical for ensuring the 5mm neon flex fits exactlyinside the reverse-side cutout channel

Deburred all edges and added a 0.5mm chamfer to prevent finger scratches during install

3. 5mm Ultra-Slim Silicone Neon Flex Forming
This is where our 40-strong handmade neon team came in. We used our 5mm Ultra-Slim Silicone Co-extruded Flex (the designer’s preferred tool for fine details, as called out on our LED Neon Flex Strip site) in a custom ice-blue-to-smoke-purple gradient to match the bar’s cocktail menu aesthetic:

Secured to the backplate with hidden UV-stable clips (no adhesive that can fail in humid bar environments)

12V low-voltage wiring, grounded to the metal backplate for full electrical safety (critical for UK commercial installs)

4. QC & Stress Testing
Every sign goes through our standard multi-stage QC before shipment:
