Our client, a new-build speakeasy called Midnight & Co.in London’s Shoreditch creative district, wanted a façade sign that matched their brand: industrial-edgy, low-light moody, and instantly Instagrammable for passers-by 3 seconds after they turn the corner.
Their brief was specific:
-
Brand name “MIDNIGHT” in a custom condensed sans-serif, plus a small crescent moon icon
-
A “floating glow” effect where light seems embedded insidea brushed metal plate, no visible acrylic edges, no bulky neon housing
-
Durable enough for a high-traffic bar environment (spills, regular cleaning, low maintenance)
-
Install-ready, with no visible wiring from the front
Acrylic backers were ruled out immediately: they couldn’t deliver the cold, tactile metal finish the client wanted, and fine cutouts in acrylic tend to yellow and chip within 12–18 months in a bar setting. A cutout metal backplate was the only solution — but it’s a far more complex build than standard Neon Signage.
Why Cutout Metal Backplate? (And Why Most Factories Can’t Do It)
A cutout metal backplate neon sign splits the visual between cold, rigid metal and soft, uniform glow — a contrast that works beautifully for industrial, luxury retail, and high-end hospitality spaces. But it requires two specialized capabilities most vendors don’t have in-house:
-
Precision metal fabrication (laser cutting, deburring, finishing) to ±0.1mm tolerance
-
Hand-bent neon flex alignment that matches the metal cutout path exactly— no gaps, no visible silicone overspill
Outsourcing one of these steps to a third party almost always leads to alignment errors: the metal cutout is 0.3mm off, the neon doesn’t fit, and the “floating glow” effect is ruined. At Vasten, we run both our metal fabrication line and our Silicone Neon Flex production under one roof, so your design intent is never lost in a game of telephone between vendors.
The Full Manufacturing Process (Step by Step)
For the Midnight & Co.build, here’s how we delivered a sign that exceeded the client’s brief:
1. Design & Feasibility Review
The client sent a hand-drawn sketch of their logo. Our in-house design team converted it to a production-ready AI vector file, then generated a 3D mockup to confirm:
-
Stroke widths for “MIDNIGHT” (condensed sans, 8mm stroke weight — thin enough to look premium, thick enough to fit 5mm neon flex inside the cutout)
-
Moon icon cutout (3mm fine edge, validated for bend radius on our 5mm ultra-slim silicone flex)
-
Neon path mapped to the reverse sideof the metal backplate, so glow shines through the cutout from behind for a clean, borderless “embedded light” effectClient approved the mockup in 48 hours.
-

2. Laser-Cut Metal Backplate (In-House)
We used 1.5mm 304 brushed stainless steel (chosen for its scratch resistance and moody finish that pairs with the bar’s brick walls and brass hardware):
-
Laser cut to ±0.1mm tolerance on our in-house CNC laser cutter — critical for ensuring the 5mm neon flex fits exactlyinside the reverse-side cutout channel
-
Deburred all edges and added a 0.5mm chamfer to prevent finger scratches during install
-
Added hidden rear-side wiring channels and flush-mount install holes (no visible screws from the front)
-
Finished with a clear anti-fingerprint coat for easy bar cleaning
3. 5mm Ultra-Slim Silicone Neon Flex Forming
This is where our 40-strong handmade neon team came in. We used our 5mm Ultra-Slim Silicone Co-extruded Flex (the designer’s preferred tool for fine details, as called out on our LED Neon Flex Strip site) in a custom ice-blue-to-smoke-purple gradient to match the bar’s cocktail menu aesthetic:
-
Hand-bent to follow the reverse-side cutout path of the “MIDNIGHT” letters and moon icon — no machine-pressed kinks, no visible solder joints on the reverse side
-
Secured to the backplate with hidden UV-stable clips (no adhesive that can fail in humid bar environments)
-
12V low-voltage wiring, grounded to the metal backplate for full electrical safety (critical for UK commercial installs)
-

4. QC & Stress Testing
Every sign goes through our standard multi-stage QC before shipment:
-
Visual alignment check (confirm neon glow lines up perfectly with front-side cutout edges)
-
48-hour mandatory burn-in at full brightness to catch any early-life LED failures
-
IP65 spray test (optional for outdoor, but we ran it anyway for spill resistance)
-
2-year warranty, consistent with our UK project standards (we’ve supplied custom neon for Disneyland, Happy Valley, and a British royal wedding — same quality bar for this Shoreditch speakeasy)
Final Result & Client Feedback
The sign was installed above the bar’s side entrance, and hit all the client’s goals:
-
Visible from 50m down the street at night, driving foot traffic from Shoreditch High Street
-
The brushed stainless + gradient purple-blue glow became a customer photo staple (the bar tagged us in 17 Instagram posts in the first month alone)
-
Zero maintenance issues 6 months in — no yellowing, no loose wiring, no visible wear
“We went to three other neon suppliers who said the cutout metal + gradient flex combo was ‘too complex’ or wanted to outsource the metal cutting. Vasten did the whole thing in-house, the tolerance was perfect, and the glow looks even more expensive than we budgeted for. It’s the first thing people comment on when they walk in.”— Owner, Midnight & Co.
Why This Project Is a Fit for Vasten (And Maybe for You)
A cutout metal backplate neon sign isn’t a mass-production item. It requires:
-
In-house metal fabrication + neon flex production (no outsourcing, no tolerance mismatches)
-
5mm ultra-slim flex capability for fine cutout paths (our signature product for designers and architects)
-
Handmade bend expertise to handle tight radii and custom gradients
-
Global project experience (UK, EU, US, Japan retail/hospitality clients in our stable portfolio)
We kept the same standard for this Shoreditch speakeasy that we use for Disneyland installs: cast acrylic where specified, co-extruded silicone flex only (no cheap PVC), 2-year warranty, and MOQ 1 for custom hero pieces.
